In the 20th century, the society was based on mass-production, mass-consumption and mass-disposal oriented by high economic growth resulting into serious problems of environment destruction, resource depletion and global warming universally. In the 21st century, it is broadly recognized that our society should switch over to “Sustainable Society” appreciating the importance of natural resource and environment.
Contrary to the concepts of materialistic wealth society in the 20th century, now the focus is on “optimized production, optimized consumption and adequate disposal” with due consideration to natural resource conservation, environmental impact and total cost. Our goal of “Sustainable Socio-Economic Society” refers to internalization of natural resource and environmental conservation in all the production-consumption stages. Our concept of sustainable society addresses the following issues:
1) Resource efficiency
2) Fairness among different localities and future generations
3) Safety through minimizing hazardous materials and environmental impacts
The material and energy consumption based quality of life results in waste generation. However, as the waste management costs and consequences are to be borne by the public, citizens’ participation for decision making on environmental policies and rules have become the need of the hour.
We have to start rebuilding of beautiful and pollution free country as soon as possible, and set a legend for sustainable society to lead internationally.
