Development of Tidal Current Power Generator Using Pendulum (Hydro-VENUS)

◆Joint Research: Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (JSPS)

◆Period: 2013-2015

Recently ocean energy resources such as tidal current or ocean current are being developed worldwide. Japan has vast ocean area, and abundant untouched natural resources are reserved there. An innovative tidal energy converter using the flow-induced vibration of a pendulum is being developed at Okayama University. This is called Hydro-VENUS (Hydrokinetic Vortex Energy Utilization System). Hydro-VENUS uses simple-shaped pendulums such as circular cylinders, and then it is harmless to fishes in comparison with the conventional propeller-type tidal energy converter with sharp blades.
